Exascale Computing Project Announces Staff Changes Within Software Technology Group
Oak Ridge, TN, Feb. 11, 2020—The US Department of Energy’s Exascale Computing Project (ECP) has announced the following staff changes within the Software Technology group.
Jonathan Carter has accepted the position of Associate Lab Director for Computing Sciences at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Carter has been on the staff of the ECP since October 2017 serving as the Deputy Director for Software Technology.
“Jonathan has supported the ECP with exemplary service, and we are thankful he will not be leaving us completely since one of his new duties is to represent Berkeley Lab on the ECP Laboratory Operations Task Force (LOTF), a key group of ECP stakeholders,” said Mike Heroux, Director of ECP Software Technology. “Jonathan brought a careful, thoughtful and seasoned approach to help lead the formation of one of the largest scientific software portfolio development efforts in the history of HPC. We will miss his direct engagement and wish him well in his new Associate Lab Director role at Berkeley Lab.”
Lois Curfman McInnes, Argonne
Filling this critical void will be Lois Curfman McInnes from Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). Lois is a senior computational scientist in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division of Argonne National Laboratory, and has been working with the ECP since its inception as a PI of several sub-projects, then as the technical area lead for the Software Technology group’s Math Libraries.
“Lois is an accomplished applied mathematician, a fellow of the Society for Applied and Industrial Mathematics (SIAM), and a leader in the HPC and DOE community overall—having been the recipient of prestigious Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award of the DOE Office of Science several years ago. Lois is particularly well-known for her work in the development of algorithms and deployment of software for solutions to linear and nonlinear questions—what we call “math libraries.” She is a widely respected by ECP staff and a real team player. We are thrilled and ECP is very fortunate to have her step into the position of Deputy Director of Software Technology,” said Doug Kothe, ECP Director.
Sherry Li, Berkeley Lab
“To fill the position of team lead for Math Libraries, we have selected Sherry Li, a Senior Scientist in the Computational Research Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory,” said Lori Diachin, ECP Deputy Director. “Sherry is an internationally-recognized mathematician and computer scientist, perhaps best known as the lead developer of SuperLU, a widely used solver library. Sherry is well-known and respected in the math software community.”
“We are fortunate to have such an incredibly seasoned, knowledgeable, and respected staff to help us lead the ECP efforts in bringing the nation’s first exascale computing software environment to fruition,” said Mike Heroux. “The ECP is one of this country’s most important advanced computing technology projects and I am confident our software efforts are in good hands moving forward.”
