In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and transition to remote work, ECP and the IDEAS Productivity project launched the panel series Strategies for Working Remotely, which explores important topics in this area.

Abstract:

This panel features brief presentations followed by engaging discussion from contributors to the SC22 Early Career Program invited talks on life/work balance conducted at the annual International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis (SC22). Speakers will provide tips and lessons shared with the SC22 Early Career Program panel on work/life balance, parenting, strategies for working remotely, and on how everyone, especially those early in their careers, can apply lessons learned from pandemic-driven change and resiliency.

Speaker Biographies:

Scott Callaghan is a Scott Callaghan is a computer scientist at the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC), at the University of Southern California. His research focuses on utilizing high performance and high throughput scientific workflows to develop, integrate, and optimize seismic hazard applications. His work includes managing and distributing large scientific datasets. Scott has a strong interest in training and retaining the next generation of HPC users. He is a presenter, mentoring organizer, and planning committee member for the International HPC Summer School. He has served as a mentor to SCEC undergraduate interns for over 15 years. He is currently the Chair of the ACM SIGHPC Education Chapter. Scott received his B.S. and M.S. from the University of Southern California, and has been a member of the HPC community since 2005.

Julia Mullen is a member of the technical staff in the MIT Lincoln Laboratory Supercomputing Center (LLSC) where she assists researchers in maximizing their use of high performance computing resources in order to minimize their time to solution. As an expert in High Performance Computing for computational engineering applications she focuses on re-designing scientific workflows to streamline processing and improve the performance of computational engineering applications. Julia leads the design and creation of online professional education courseware for the LLSC. As part of this effort, she facilitates the development of new tools for the Open edX platform to provide support for online Laboratory courseware. Her research includes learning analytics for adaptive learning design and the integration of hands-on physical construction and experimentation with MOOC technologies. Her work has been published in both the scientific computing and educational domains. Julia received her Ph.D in Engineering from Brown University and her B.S.M.E from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Elaine M. Raybourn is a social scientist in the Applied Information Sciences Center (Applied Cognitive Science) at Sandia National Laboratories. Her research focuses on virtual teams of teams, methods for software productivity, immersive virtual environments, scientific visualization, and transmedia learning. She was the SC21 Scientific Visualization & Data Analytics Showcase Chair. Elaine has worked remotely for over 15 years while at Sandia National Laboratories: from the UK as a guest researcher at British Telecom; Germany (Fraunhofer FIT) and France (INRIA) as a Fellow of the European Research Consortium in Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM), and most recently as Sandia’s Institutional PI for the Exascale Computing Project (ECP) Interoperable Design of Extreme-scale Application Software (IDEAS) productivity project. Elaine leads PSIP and the ECP panel series Strategies for Working Remotely.

Moderator Biographies:

Osni Marques is a Staff Scientist in the Applied Mathematics and Computational Research Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He has worked on various aspects of high-end scientific computing, including eigenvalue solvers for applications in engineering, biochemistry, earth sciences and electronic structure calculations; and algorithms for dense linear algebra calculations (eigenvalue problems and SVD) in the LAPACK and ScaLAPACK libraries. Currently he leads the Training & Productivity (T&P) effort within the U.S. Department of Energy’s Exascale Computing Project and the the Best Practices for HPC Software Developers Webinar Series (HPC-BP).

Suzanne Parete-Koon is a High Performance Computing Engineer for Oak Ridge Leadership computing facility (OLCF). She works to support scientific applications running on Summit and other high performance computing (HPC) resources at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. She leads the ECP project’s new HPC Workforce Development and Retention Action Group.
